Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Join Brooklyn Children’s Museum for a day celebrating the cultures and traditions of Indigenous peoples, together with the North American Indigenous Center of New York.

Join us as we honor Indigenous cultures with:

  • Traditional dance performances, including hoop dance
  • Interactive storytelling sessions
  • Hands-on food demonstrations
  • Craft workshops including beadwork, corn husk doll making, and terra cotta pottery
  • Native artisans vendor marketplace on our rooftop

Schedule

Native American Traditional Storytelling, Show & Tell, and Artist Demo
🕒  10:15 am – 11:00 am

Join a session of traditional Mi’kmaq teachings through storytelling and artist demonstration with Claudia Haddad. There will be an ongoing artist quillwork demonstration, interactive song and musical instrument exploration.

Terracotta Pottery
🕒  10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Visit the ColorLab Art Studio and make your own terracotta pinch pot or coil pot inspired by Native American arts.

Artist Marketplace
🕒  10:30 am – 1:00 pm

North American Indigenous Center of New York will be featuring a wide range of Native American artists and vendors. Explore traditional crafts and art that are available to purchase.

Northeastern Haudenosaunee Dance Troupe
🕒  11:00 am – 12:00 pm

Immerse yourself in the traditional Haudenosaunee Longhouse Socials with various Northeastern Social dances and songs. The head dancers will also be sharing the cultural foundations and knowledge in relation to the songs and dances.

Traditional Arts and Craft: Cornhusk Doll Making
🕒  12:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Engage in the traditional craft of making Cornhusk Dolls using natural materials with artist Chrisjohn Arts.

Reimagining the Strawberry
🕒  1:00 pm – 1:45 pm

Learn about the role of strawberries in Haudenosaunee culture and throughout the northeast of Turtle Island. Join Chef David Smoke-McCluskey at this ken’niiohontésha (gah-nee-oh-hoon-des-sah) strawberry teaching and make your own strawberry drinks!
