Join BCM during spring break for a week-long celebration of our amazing planet! Each day presents exciting STEAM-inspired programs consisting of dynamic performances, hands-on workshops, and special projects in BCM’s new makerspace, Nature’s Engineers. The week is organized around four overarching themesGrowSustainCare, and Explore.

Today’s theme is Explore: Water, Sky, and Space. Explore the different interconnections of Earth’s ecosystems and our place in the cosmos!

Schedule

Billion Oyster Project

🕒 10:30 am–12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm–4:30 pm

Explore the hidden world of oyster reefs in New York Harbor with our interactive ‘Who Lives in Oyster Reefs’? activity! Create a spinner wheel to reveal a diverse array of organisms inhabiting Billion Oyster Project’s oyster reefs. Join us for a tactile, fun, educational building and coloring experience for all ages, highlighting the rich biodiversity of these vital ecosystems.

Touch Tank

🕒 11:00 am–11:45 pm, and 3:30 pm–4:15 pm

Find out about the amazing aquatic animals of Brooklyn Children’s Museum with this hands-on learning experience!

Become a Field Scientist

🕒 11:15 pm–11:45 pm, and 3:30 pm–4:15 pm

Join Lily Eligator from the Bedrock Critical Zone for an interactive lesson about field scientists. Participants will get a mock up training of what it’s like to go into different climate fields and prepare for them!

Earth Day Storytime – The Water Princess

🕒 12:00 pm–12:30 pm

Join Anu Sehgal of The Culture Tree for an Earth Day storytime featuring the book The Water Princess.

Dance Performance – The Tree Hugger 

🕒 2:30 pm–3:00 pm

The Tree-Hugger is based on a true story from 1730 in India. A young woman, Amrita Devi and her three daughters lead the Tree Hugging or chipko movement to protect the trees in their community. The Culture Tree presents this story narrated by Anu Sehgal and dance by Sandhya Rajkumar.

Animal Veterinary

🕒 2:30 pm–4:30 pm

Learn how to use tools such as a stethoscope, otoscope, and thermometer to perform a check-up on a fuzzy animal friend at our animal care station.

Earth Guardians in ColorLab Art Studio

🕒 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Half-hour long sessions, starting every 45 minutes.

Visit the ColorLab Art Studio and create your own Earth guardian creatures inspired by Wangechi Mutu’s sentinels. Participants will use natural materials like wood, clay, sticks, leaves and twine.

Plant Dyes in Nature’s Engineers Makerspace

🕒 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Half-hour long sessions, starting every 45 minutes.

Learn about plants and the colors that they produce! Test different plant-based pigments to create your own unique colors.
